At 40 feet, this knit sock covers a longer central vacuum hose than the more common 30 and 35-foot socks, sized for larger homes or systems where a single inlet has to reach the far end of the house. It is a plain grey knit that stretches to hug the hose, and it closes with tie ends (part 30609).
Without a cover, a bare crushproof hose scuffs paint and dents door frames every time it gets dragged around a corner or through a doorway, especially in narrower hallways where there is little clearance. The knit fabric cushions those contact points and gives the hose a softer, warmer surface to hold. Tie ends at both ends keep the sock from sliding down the hose or bunching up as it coils.

Because it does not ship with an install tube, threading it onto a 40-foot hose by hand takes more time and patience than a shorter cover does, so plan on working the fabric down the hose in sections rather than trying to pull it the full length in one motion. The stretch knit has enough give to work over the crushproof hose diameters common on whole-house installs, tolerating hoses that run slightly thicker or thinner than nominal. Measure the hose you actually use rather than assuming it matches the longest run in the house, since inlets nearer the middle of a floor plan are often served by a shorter hose.
