Product details

Part 2031421 is the foot lever that lets the body of a Bissell upright drop back to recline, fitted to the 4104, 92L3P, 92L3W and 98N4.

It gets stood on every time the machine is used, and failure is mechanical rather than gradual. Given enough cycles, the plastic fatigues right where the lever pivots, the little return spring works itself loose, or the catch tooth wears round until it stops holding. The result is a handle that will not release to recline, or one that will not lock upright and flops forward the moment you let go, which is its own hazard when the machine is left standing near a stairway or an open doorway.

Because the pedal sits at the base of the upright where it takes direct impact and moisture from shoes, it is one of the first plastic components on these machines to fail, often well ahead of the motor or the belt. A pedal that has started to feel spongy under foot, or that catches only when pressed at a particular angle, is already partway through failing even if it has not snapped yet, and it is worth swapping before it fails completely and strands the handle in whichever position it happens to be in.

Swapping just the pedal is a small job next to replacing the entire lower body, and it makes sense whenever the base underneath it is otherwise in good shape.

  • Part: 2031421, detent pedal
  • Fits: Bissell 4104, 92L3P, 92L3W, 98N4
  • Function: foot-operated release for the handle recline mechanism
  • Replace when: the handle refuses to drop for cleaning, or falls forward on its own instead of staying upright
  • Early warning: a pedal that feels spongy or only catches at one angle is partway through failing
