Product details

Part 1601513 is the red separator assembly inside the Bissell 3583 upright, the internal housing that keeps debris moving toward the dirt tank instead of drifting back through the airflow path.

Separator housings take a beating over the life of a machine, since every bit of debris the vacuum picks up passes through this piece on its way to the tank. Once it cracks or warps, the parts around it lose their alignment, and both the seal and the machine's ability to hold suction start to slip. Left in place, a loose separator wears down whatever sits next to it as well, and it is common for a cracked separator to show up first as a rattle from inside the dirt cup rather than as a suction complaint, since the crack has to open enough to actually leak air before performance drops.

A quick way to tell a separator problem from a clog is to empty and rinse the dirt cup, then run the machine briefly with the cup reinstalled but nothing in it. A rattle or a whistle that persists with an empty, clean cup points at the separator itself rather than at packed debris, and it is worth doing that check before assuming the whole cup assembly needs replacing.

It fits the Bissell 1813, 1819, 1820, 1823, 1825, 2488, 2489, 24899, 2490, 2491 and 3583. Several of these share a body style but not every internal part, so match the exact number stamped on the machine's data plate rather than assuming a lookalike is close enough.

  • Part: 1601513, red separator assembly
  • Fits: Bissell 1813, 1819, 1820, 1823, 1825, 2488, 2489, 24899, 2490, 2491, 3583
  • Function: directs debris from the airflow path into the dirt tank
  • Replace when: the housing is visibly cracked or warped, or suction drops without an obvious clog
  • Quick check: a rattle or whistle with a clean, empty dirt cup points to the separator, not a clog
