Product details

Behind a Bissell 12B1 or 68C7 upright, this roller and its axle carry the back half of the machine, part 2038070, also sold as the 44M3, taking the full weight of a loaded dirt cup with every stride.

Wheels tend to get ignored until they fail outright. A flat spot on the roller, or slack that has developed at the axle, is a common cause of a machine that starts steering itself sideways, rocks on tile or hardwood, or suddenly needs noticeably more shoulder to keep moving in a straight line, and a tapping or grinding noise from the back tends to arrive before the extra drag does. That tapping is the giveaway: a flat spot strikes the floor once per rotation, so its rhythm speeds up right along with your walking pace, which distinguishes a roller problem from anything further up in the drivetrain.

The axle itself wears more slowly than the roller spinning on it, but once play develops the roller starts sitting at a slight angle instead of running true, and that angled contact accelerates wear on whichever edge is taking the extra load. Fitting a new roller alone in that situation only buys a short reprieve before it wears unevenly the same way.

It fits the Bissell 12B1, the 68C7 and the 1240. Swapping the roller and axle as a set, instead of the roller by itself, is what brings back smooth, even travel, and while the machine is already flipped over, take a moment to check the front wheels too.

  • Part: 2038070, roller assembly with axle
  • Fits: Bissell 12B1, 68C7, 1240
  • Function: rear roller and axle that carry the machine's weight while rolling
  • Replace when: the vacuum wobbles, drags, or pulls to one side, especially with a click or scrape from the rear
  • Diagnose: a click that speeds up as you push faster points to a flat-spotted roller
