Product details

Part 119916-12 is a bypass Lamb motor built on Ametek's 7.2 inch frame, wired for 120 volts, with two fan stages and a tangential horn discharge. Ametek describes a tangential bypass blower as one where the horn forces air out at a right angle to the inlet, which is how the exhaust gets captured and directed inside a central vacuum power unit, so the horn is part of the motor rather than a spare accessory.

Bypass construction means the working air and the cooling air stay separate, with a dedicated fan pushing cooling air over the armature and field windings. That is why the windings stay cleaner over the life of the motor than they would in a thru-flow design pulling dirty air across them. The second fan stage raises the vacuum the motor can pull at the cost of some airflow, which is the trade a power unit makes when the pipe run is long.

A power unit signals a tired motor in a few familiar ways: every inlet in the house pulls noticeably weaker rather than just one, the housing gives off a burnt smell after normal use, the bearings develop a howl under load, or the motor hums when you switch it on but never actually spins up. Ametek has built several 7.2 inch bypass motors that look alike, so read the number off your old motor and compare the horn and mounting boss before you buy.

  • Part: 119916-12, bypass motor with horn
  • Spec: 7.2 inch frame, 120 volt, 2 fan stages, tangential discharge, 1750 watt
  • Carbon brush kit: Ametek lists 833503-51 for this motor
  • Symptoms to replace: Weak pull at every inlet, burnt smell, howling bearings, motor hums but does not spin
