Its fit determines whether the nozzle actually seals against the carpet or leaks air along its edge, which directly affects how much suction reaches the brush roll.
Running the nozzle over door thresholds and raised carpet edges is what typically warps or cracks a bottom plate over time, and the mounting tabs holding it in place tend to break first since they are thinner than the plate itself.
