This is the HEPA exhaust filter for the Panasonic 7500 Series, part AC38KAXVZ000. It sits at the end of the airflow path, so every cubic foot of air the machine moves passes through it before returning to the room.
That position is what makes it a wear item. Fine dust that got past the bag loads into the pleats and stays there, and as the media fills the restriction works backwards through the whole machine: suction falls off, the motor runs hotter and louder, and the exhaust stops smelling clean.
Change it around once a year, sooner in a home with pets or heavy carpet. If suction has dropped and a fresh bag did not fix it, the exhaust filter is the next thing to look at — ahead of anything that involves tools.
