The sock is the reason these hoses survive being pulled through wall tubing thousands of times. It sits between the hose and the pipe, and between the hose and whatever furniture or trim it passes on the way to the room, so neither takes the abrasion directly. Socks wear fastest where they flex most, so look for thinning or fraying at those points rather than along the straight sections.
Tools connect straight onto the mini cuff at the end, without a coupler in between, and the whole hose can go in the wash with the sock still on it rather than being stripped down first.
