This replacement latch cover screw, in the early short version, fits the Hoover 6430. It fastens the latch cover in place, holding that section of the housing together.
A missing or stripped screw lets the latch cover work loose, which causes rattling, misaligned parts, and can leave the assembly insecure. The correct size and length screw returns the cover to a solid, proper fit. Using the right fastener also avoids stripping the housing thread, which is far harder to repair than a lost screw.
