Single-stage construction puts the whole job on one fan stage, which is why the number on the old motor matters more than its outline does. A motor of the same diameter built with a second stage behind the first behaves differently on the same machine, so the stage count is the first thing to confirm rather than the last, and a photograph of the data plate is worth more than a description of it when you come to order.
Bearings are the part of this motor with the longest run in them and the clearest way of telling you they are finished. The sound goes first, from a steady tone to a whine or a rumble that rises as the machine warms up, and airflow at the hose falls off behind it.
