Over the brush roller and its drive sits a molded shell, and part 50778SE is that shell for a red AUTOMATIC X4, supplied complete rather than as separate pieces. It keeps grit off the belt and gears and gives the head its finished shape.

Cracks tend to start where the cover meets furniture or a doorframe, and once a clip has broken the head no longer closes down flat. Debris then finds a path onto the drive, and a stripped gear train is a far bigger repair than a cover. The warning most owners notice first is a rattle from the head at speed, followed by a cover that lifts at one corner when the machine is lowered onto carpet.

With the shell off, the drive is easy to inspect and the parts are all listed separately. The belt is 5110, the 12-inch brush roller is 5010AM with 5010GE as the soft-bristle alternative, and 8366WS is the tool SEBO sells for cutting hair and thread off a roller without taking it out of the machine. A worn belt fitted at the same time as a new cover saves opening the head twice in the same year.
