Bristle strips on this roller are what agitate carpet on a Shark upright, working embedded dirt up out of the pile as the machine passes over it rather than leaving it settled in place. Part 98-3410-01 is the complete roller assembly, not just the bristle strip.
Two separate failure patterns show up on these rollers. Bristles wear down and go bald in patches long before the roller mechanically stops turning, and separately the roller itself can bind or seize, most often from hair and thread that has wrapped tight around the ends near the bearings. Both problems look the same from the floor: the machine glides over carpet without lifting much dirt, and pile that used to spring back up after a pass stays pressed flat instead.
Deep carpet fibers put considerably more strain on a brush roll than low-pile or hard flooring does, so a household or facility running mostly plush carpet tends to see both bristle wear and bearing wear arrive sooner than the same machine would show running mainly on thinner carpet.
Fits the Shark NV750, NV650, NV652, and NV795 uprights. Shark carried this same nozzle platform across several models over multiple years, so match the full model number on your machine's rating label against this list before ordering rather than going by the family name alone.
