Nothing snaps in an obvious way; the lever simply stops holding, the body drops out of its upright position on its own, and the machine begins to feel loose in the hand as it is carried between rooms. The strip-down is short, so it is worth fitting a fresh spring any time the lever mechanism is opened for another reason. Note which way round the old one sits before it comes out, since a spring fitted backwards will bind rather than return, and work with the machine unplugged and laid over so nothing is under load as the assembly comes apart.
